2020 was the year of the music video, my go-to entertainment during shutdown. Here’s a few of my “top hits”—the most artistic, impactful, and/or entertaining MVs I found in 2020 (note: these are not blanket endorsements of the artists, lyrics, etc.)
10. Hot Rod – Dayglow
Dayglow was my favorite band discovery this year. I saw Jul listening to them on Spotify; I gave them a listen and was immediately hooked. 😀
9. creature w/ Orchestra – half•alive
This is a stunning arrangement. I’ve shared it before, but it’s too good not to share again.
8. I’M OK – iKON
A K-pop MV from 2019, with a 2020 vibe. The nerd in me is obsessed with the orchestration. Otherwise, this is a bit of a guilty pleasure.
7. DINOSAUR – AKMU
“DINOSAUR” was a golden YouTube recommendation. A whimsical song about facing your childhood fears? Sign me up! This is also how I discovered AKMU, an amazing brother-sister duo from South Korea.
6. WHAT YOU GONNA DO??? – Bastille
I was pleasantly surprised by this new single. I hadn’t really followed Bastille in a while (used to be a casual fan), and this is a new sound for them. Loving Dan’s new look, too. 😀
5. How Can I Love the Heartbreak – AKMU
The song, the aesthetic… ❤
4. Time – NF
This is basically a short film with poetry set to music. I like that it’s about wanting to stay together vs. your typical breakup song.
3. Sad Happy – Circa Waves
Another YT recommendation! Fair warning, this one has a dark ending, but it’s definitely creative. And boy, it’s like they wrote the song for me.
2. Dynamite – BTS
Best song of the year. (Who am I kidding, one of the best things of the year.) This is not the official MV, but I like this performance video even better.
1. FAKE LOVE – BTS
To be real with you all… this was my favorite music video watched in 2020. I can’t explain why, other than I love the song, and the video is so emo, high energy, and over-the-top. (You can judge me, I would, too. 😆 )
Well, that’s my list. Let me know if you had any favorites (and feel free to share a link)!
12/23 EDIT: Woke up this morning and realized I’d forgotten my other contender for first place – “Run Away” by MINO:
